Take a day to focus in on we are entering into Elul and to get into the teshuva spirit. Below is the schedule plus the bios of the speakers. It should be a very inspiring day, don’t miss out on the opportunity!
Rabbi Shmuel Goldin served as the Rav of Congregation Ahavath Torah in Englewood, New Jersey, one of the largest and most prominent synagogues in North America, for 33 years, until his aliya in September 2017. Upon his aliya, he became the synagogue’s Rabbi Emeritus and assumed the new position of Senior Scholar with Nefesh B’Nefesh. In this capacity, he will be concentrating on strengthening the emotional connection between the diaspora Jewish community and the State of Israel. While actively serving his congregation, Rav Goldin taught Bible and Philosophy at Yeshiva University for over 20 years. He also authored a five book set of commentary on the parsha, “Unlocking the Torah Text” that has garnered extensive critical and popular acclaim. Rabbi Goldin’s insightful and thoughtful ideas bring the parsha to life in a unique way. His new volume “Unlocking the Haggada” will be published shortly. He will begin teaching a weekly Parsha class at the OU Israel center on Sundays at 10am.
Mrs. Sylvie Shatz grew up in Paris and studied for three years at the Gateshead seminary, during which she obtained a Bachelor’s degree in Literature and a Master’s degree in History. She taught Limmudei Kodesh in France and then made Aliya a few years later. Mrs. Shatz lectures extensively on Torah topics in three different languages (English, Hebrew, and French) in many different capacities – Israeli high schools, American seminaries (including Neve Yerushalayim), and French seminaries (including Nerlitz and La Source). She also teaches a weekly class on Perek Shira at the OU Israel center.
Mrs. Yehudit Chana Yeinan – After growing up in Detroit Michigan, Yehudit Chana Yeinan spent a total of about 19 years in Japan as an English teacher, translator and journalist. Yehudit Chana will share with us how raising her Jewish-Japanese sons led her to live a Jewish life in Israel.
Rabbi Sam Shor is the Program Director of the Orthodox Union’s Israel Center in Jerusalem, where he oversees a vast network of Torah classes, tours and social programming for Jerusalem’s Anglo community. He recently spearheaded the launch of JCHAT- the Jerusalem Community Hub for Anglos and Torah, a new OU initiative which is focused on creating a community for young professionals in Jerusalem. For the past two decades, Rabbi Shor has gained acclaim for his inspirational teaching, his work in adult education and as a mentor for young rabbis across the globe. Prior to his Aliya to Israel, “Rabbi Sam” was a popular teacher in the New York Metropolitan area, and he has been invited to communities across North America as a Scholar-in- Residence. Introducing students to many of the fundamental works of Jewish ethics, morality and spirituality, Rabbi Sam’s talent lies in allowing Jewish adults of all backgrounds to access, explore, and be inspired by a wide variety of our sacred texts. Rabbi Shor lives with his family in Jerusalem’s Katamon neighborhood where he is a popular Torah teacher for the English speaking community.
